The Hare is associated with magic, transformation, fertility, & rebirth. The Hare was so sacred to the Ancient Celtics that they were highly against the killing of it. However, the ban would be lifted during the Spring Equinox when they could be eaten to share in their fertility & magical power. The women often hunted for the hares because it was said whoever caught a hare would become pregnant shortly after. Hares are also known for giving birth to more hares, so the Celtics believed in hunting the older ones, they were helping to maintain the balance in Nature. In some folk tales, witches are said to have been able to shape-shift into hares, including Isobel Gowdy who was tried for witchcraft in Scotland in 1662. Withes who shapeshifted into hares were like faeries in that they’d run the countryside at night playing tricks on people & stealing milk. It was said that only a silver bullet could kill them. Thus, the hare, milk, & silver are potent symbols during this time.
