Saturnalia is a Roman Pagan festival celebrated in December to honor the agriculture & time god, Saturnus. Saturnus’ mythological reign was said to have occurred during the Golden Age, an age of enlightenment, peace, & prosperity. Because of this, Saturnus is regarded as the god who represents periodic renewal, dissolution & enlightenment, peace & jovial spirit, & abundance & prosperity. But, Saturnus does not bestow any of these gifts without the work. Oftentimes, Saturnus presents themselves when we are in a moment of great transition, unveiling truths & forcing us to do the internal workings to uncover that which is holding us back from our truth, potential, & happiness. Like the cyclical birth and reaping of agriculture, parts of us must die in order to make room for new seeds & the renewal therein. During Saturnalia especially, we honor Saturnus by reversing the civil order and shifting perceptions that we might remember that nothing is permanent & that all life is subject to change. Contrary to the Christocentric convention of the modern era, we celebrate the closing dark of the year, remember the inherent sovereignty of Self, & breathe deep in the death of past modes as we welcome the coming year. We feast and make merry at this time to remember the lessons and wisdom of The God of Agriculture, Death, and Sovereignty, Saturnus. This Bringer of Knowledge, and Father of Gods asks us to examine the liminal, unravel the many-fold layers of self, & unveil the myriad beautiful contradictions & challenges in the world & how we are connected to it.
