This listing is for one doll or maypole, or the whole set. All dolls include a clear plastic stand.

Poppets can be used as an archetype for any Solstice altar to represent fertility & the harvest. In some cultures, they are often made in the image of someone/something else & used for protection. These Swedish dockas or “dolls” have cultural significance, especially amongst Pagans & are especially inspired by the characters & archetypes in Midsommar (the movie by Ari Aster), which focuses on a specific Swedish Pagan Cult.

-MIDSOMMARSTÅNG: the Midsommarstång is a traditional Swedish maypole erected during Midsummer celebrations to represent fertility & Soring. There were many variations of maypoles all throughout Europe, but the most popular in Sweden nowadays is the cross with the two rings. It is also the maypole represented in Midsommar. It is common for children or young maidens to dance in various known movements & gestures around the pole, some of which are based off everyday tasks like folding laundry or washing oneself. Sometimes, the Små grodorna (“the little frogs”) is performed around the pole by the children, as well. The pole is often made of wood, fresh, leaves, & sometimes flowers & ribbons to symbolize Spring, fertility of the land, & to honor the trees.

The Midsommarstång measures about 14” high & about 9” wide. It is entirely structured with wood with a wood slice base & adorned with moss, wired vine, colorful mulberry paper roses, & removable silk ribbon in the colors of the Swedish flag.

*If you would like different colors other than yellow & blue, please include them in the notes & we will try to accommodate any & all requests based on availability.

-MAJ DROTTNING DOCKA: The docka (Swedish for “doll” or “poppet”) is based on Dani’s character & her transition into becoming the Maj drottning (Swedish for “May Queen”). Doused in a gown of floras & an extraordinarily large flower crown, she is overcome with self-realization & realization of the natural world, & becomes the maiden that ushers the sun to its highest peak, the erection of the trees, & blossoming of the flowers. The May Queen in many cultures represents growth, fertility, vitality, & youthfulness. In some European traditions, she represents the Fairy Queen from the realm of the Fae.

This doll is created in the dramatic Midsommar image & is made with locally sourced corn husks & covered in over 150 colorful mulberry paper roses.

-BJÖRNDOCKA: The Björn (Swedish for “bear”) is based off of Christian’s character (Dani’s boyfriend) & his transition into becoming the sacrifice that would cleanse the cult of their sins & sorrows, while in a way clearing Dani of her own. The bear is also a symbol of great strength & courage to the Vikings, which had a significant influence on the Midsommar movie. In many Pagan cultures, the bear symbolism is also rooted in Midsummer traditions, representing strength, vitality, & thriving.

This doll is made with locally sourced corn husks & is tucked into the skin of a bear plushy (much like Dani’s boyfriend in the movie) that has been partially re-sewn & is adorned with white fangs.

*Each piece is handmade & will have small variations. Please note that because of this, you will not receive items exactly as pictured. Variations may include, but are not limited to placement of flowers, flower colors, etc.

*Although these items are based on Pagan traditions that have been celebrated by various cultures for centuries, they are deeply inspired by the movie Midsommar by Ari Aster.
